Mortar Repair

Mortar repair is the process of fixing damaged, cracked, or deteriorating mortar joints in brick or stone masonry to restore strength, stability, and weather resistance. Over time, exposure to the elements can cause mortar to break down, leading to gaps that allow moisture to penetrate and potentially damage the surrounding masonry.

How Mortar Repair Works:

  1. Assessment: The damaged or weakened mortar is identified, usually where it’s cracked, missing, or crumbling.

  2. Removal: The old mortar is carefully removed to a certain depth—usually 1/2 to 1 inch—without harming the bricks or stones.

  3. Cleaning: The joints are cleaned of dust and debris to ensure proper bonding.

  4. Mixing New Mortar: A suitable mortar mix is prepared—ideally matching the original in composition, color, and texture (lime-based for older buildings).

  5. Filling the Joints: The new mortar is applied into the joints in layers, compacted, and tooled (shaped) to match the existing profile.

  6. Curing: The mortar is allowed to cure slowly, often with light misting or covering, to avoid cracking.
